Those of you (and there were many … thank you!) who were at the AGM on the 20th heard Martin Dancy give us an update on the Matakana Link Road.
Martin has since provided us with a further update, as per the following …
Further to our recent discussions I have received a mandate from Omaha, Matakana & Point Wells Residents Associations to represent them at this meeting and subsequent. Roger Williams is in the process of receiving mandates from Sandspit, Snells Beach & Algies Bay so we cover both the main peninsulars East from Warkworth. We all believe that we are in agreement as to what we hope to achieve although we may be coming from it from different angles. For clarity I summarise below my understanding of what these objectives are as follows :
1/ AT to apply for land designation for 4 lanes and pathways the full length of MLR, SH1 to Matakana Road.
2/ AT Resource consent for construction & maintenance to take into account the up to date plans for 90 unit industrial estate with two interchanges to MLR , 1200 houses to be built close by , the recent increase in traffic volumes and traffic queue issues and the fact that many more people with second homes locally will start to live here permanently once the motorway opens .
3/ AT to enter into a design process that involves one or more construction companies at the outset to obtain the optimum outcome in terms of the design and build at best value for money.
4/ AT to allow a flexible Tendering process that sees a number of options quoted for now and including estimates of retrofits costs in x number of years time.
5/ AT to declare their data and conclusions on traffic flows at various intersections along the route and the justification for traffic lights over roundabouts or both .
6/ AT to explain how they intend to route the Sandspit/ Snells Beach traffic when the motorway opens and in the future.
7/ A commitment from AT that they will ensure that the MLR opens at the same time as the motorway.
8/ Pathways do not need to be on both sides of the motorway , do not have to be gold plated design as connectivity is more important. The Matakana Coast Trail Trust coupled with Council’s
Greenways plan would support the pathways leaving the MLR to go through the Show Ground as long as this part is built at the same time as the MLR and that there is Connectivity to Warkworth.
9/ We accept that an MLR in any form delivered on time is better than no road at all .
10/ Design a large park & ride into the area near the Motorway intersection (This was accepted by NZTA/ AT in our discussions several years ago to avoid the retrofit costs experienced at Albany & Silverdale)
