Consultation is at long last open on Hill Street intersection improvements. The NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport are working together on a business case for long term improvements to the Hill Street intersection.
A number of options for long term improvements have been considered. These focus on simplifying traffic movements, improving current congestion issues, and providing for future transport needs.
They now invite you to provide feedback on the short list options proposed. We encourage you to have your say!
We’ve been studying the 3 options presented by NZTA:
Option A: Proposes a roundabout with vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists on all arms potentially controlled by traffic lights. The roundabout is oval shaped to increase distance between arms, creating gaps for traffic to enter. Roundabouts promote safer speeds and reduce vehicle conflicts as drivers always give way to their right. Option B: Proposes traffic signals at the Hill Street intersection controlling all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Elizabeth Street would be one way towards the town centre, and traffic leaving the town centre would get to SH1 via a new connection at Bank Street. Option B variation: Includes a variation which reduces vehicle movements to a ‘left in’ only at Elizabeth Street. Drivers from the north, south and west would access Elizabeth Street via a roundabout at Matakana Road/Sandspit Road. However, we are of the view that there should be another option – effectively a combination of Option A, and Option B variation.
We believe roundabouts are the way to go – NOT traffic lights!
We believe the best option is one that actually has 2 roundabouts – a roundabout at Hill Street (and SH1 and Sandspit Road/Matakana Road); and another roundabout at the actual intersection of Sandspit Road with Matakana Road.
We believe there should be nothing preventing support for another option, and we should not be constrained by only those now presented to us by NZTA.
It is not clear from the information made available, how many lanes are being proposed at the Hill Street roundabout. We would argue there should be 2 lanes; and also that the roundabout needs to be of a size, and shape, to allow for an easy flow of traffic (including heavy vehicles / buses / trucks with trailers).
We also note that these proposals don’t yet include detail on the inclusion of walking and cycling approaches to the roundabout. However we are told they will ensure that final proposals for walking and cycling on the approaches to the Hill Street intersection (as part of the Supporting Growth Programme) are aligned with their long term improvements, and they will be confirmed during the next stage of the business case once a preferred option has been confirmed.
