UPDATE: Auckland Council advises that their contractors completed their rabbit eradication on Monday, 15th March. They reported that 107 rabbits were eliminated, with a larger than expected number noticed at the northern end and quite a few along the beach.
Council may also look at grid searching and fumigating the active rabbit warrens in the dunes in the future. The next rabbit shoot will be Wednesday 19th May (weather permitting).
The Council has advised that there will further rabbit control measures next month, with details in the attached letter.
Apparently, the contractors could be working across all the reserves in Omaha (where it’s safe to do so) so please take care in all areas.
NB at the recent AGM, the query was asked as to where Council’s responsibility for rabbit control lay and we have subsequently been advised through the Rodney Local Board that it is only on Council land.
