The road cycling can be limited, with some narrow roads, so while the rides are epic, they can be dangerous – so please take care! Some great rides include the road to Tauwharanui, or the ride out to Leigh. For the really fit ones, try the ride over the hill from Leigh to Pakiri, or the bvig ride over the hill up Matakana Valley Road via Pakiri, Leigh and home (approx 55km). Make sure you have some fluro’s and lights handy though!
Mountain bikers are better served, starting with the dedicated bike path out of Omaha, turn left at Jones road, then follow the dirt road to the cycleway which will take you off road all the way to Matakana. As you approach the top of Takatu, keep an eye out for markings to the “off road” track – there is a great little technical ride in amongst the forest. A ride to Tauwharanui is also rewarded with a great little off road track in the nature reserve.
Coming soon is a mountain bike track from Mangawhai to Matakana. This will be a part of the great NZ cycleways and promises to be a great addition to the area. We will keep you posted.
