Located near the Southern end, the Quarry can be accessed off Mangatawhiri Drive. Car parks are available. This project is now in its 4th year and we have seen some amazing progress. Over 3000 plants have been planted in the area, and will eventually form a native planting corridor running from the Taniko Forest all the way to Tauwharanui. Over 150 volunteers have worked hard every year to make this a success, along with the good people at BNZ’s “closed for good” program. The tracks are now well established, and used daily.
This area will also form the entrance/exit point for the Taniko Walkway. If you haven’t walked the quarry yet, please go and have a look – the views are outstanding, although the walk can be taxing (130 steps to the top).
Apparently, the local record has a runner doing 12 consecutive laps of the quarry…
