The council have recently erected some more signs to warn people off from walking on the sand dunes. They have very good reasons to do this. Firstly, the Sand dunes are the communities first and major line of defence in the event of a major storm surge or Tsunami. Weaknesses in the dunes (where people have been excavating a track, or deliberately damaging them) are the first areas where the water flows to and subsequently erodes more dune.
The dunes are a result of many years horizontal and vertical accretion aided in a big part by the groynes system at the northern end of the beach. Historically they have grown and been damaged as the seasons have gone on, but over the past 15 years they are now showing strong signs of growth, and starting to stand up to a number of major storm events. This is great news for Omaha, and highlights the reason to try to protect them.
Please refrain from walking on the Dunes, and please also help us to educate the kids about the importance of staying off the dunes.
