Hi, everyone – we’ve received this update from Aaron Pickering at the Auckland Council about upcoming work on the predator fence at the northern end.
“You will no doubt be aware of the ongoing erosion eating away at the dunes in front of the eastern end of the sanctuary predator fence. The erosion and dune removal is now compromising the integrity of the fence in this area. We have been working closely with the Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust but wanted to inform the resident body of the project.
The necessary consents and approvals are now in place to enable a small retreat to be undertaken.
The works are scheduled to start during the first week of August. The work includes the realignment as outlined below, the removal of the older section of the fence, and follow up planting /infilling of the dunes.
I expect this work to take 1-2 weeks to complete, but may be extended slightly depending on the trapping requirements that the trust wants to undertake of the additional area.”
