From Auckland Council this week:
Tena koutou,
We’re reaching out to you to follow up on feedback you provided to a project being undertaken by Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), part of Auckland Council, to better understand the Auckland region’s tsunami risk and help our communities make decisions that protect themselves and families in tsunami emergencies.
As part of this work, AEM has published new evacuation maps based on new technical computer modelling of the region’s exposure to dangerous tsunami waves. We shared with you the link to these maps on the Auckland Emergency Management Hazard site and later the link to the public survey where AEM was asking Auckland citizens key questions that helped us understand how Aucklanders use the coast, and how confident they feel to act during tsunami emergencies.
Following on from the above work we developed recommendations aimed at improving tsunami awareness and to preparing coastal communities for an emergency. We are now gathering your feedback on our recommendations, which will be presented to the Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee.
Our recommendations
Our recommendations include ways to grow tsunami resilience before and during an emergency. The recommendations are separated into things that may already be happening but should be enhanced or updated, and new initiatives that should be developed.
We want to know if:
- You support the proposed recommendations for the local board areas.
- There is any other feedback you want to give us on this programme.
We have now launched an AK Have Your Say survey which runs for until 2 May 2025 on the proposed recommendations, separated by local board area. Please see the link below should you or your organisation would like to provide feedback. You can provide feedback on up to three local board areas using our feedback form. If you wish to provide feedback for more than three areas, use an additional form or use the online form.
