We are advised by the Auckland Council’s contractor that a rabbit culling operation will be undertaken on the full-length of the Omaha dunes at the following times:
- Tuesday 23 June: Start 10:00 pm. Finish around 5:00 am – COMPLETED
- Wednesday 24 June: Start 10:00 pm. Finish around 5:00 am – POSTPONED (possibly to Thursday, 25 June)
- Tuesday 30 June: Start 10:00 pm. Finish around 5:00 am
Details
There will be a team of 4 staff, working in pairs, or as a group. Staff will be undertaking the control on foot and will be wearing hi-viz vests. They will be using a combination of thermal imaging equipment and a red filtered spotlight. The firearms being used are suppressed .22 rifles. Rabbit carcasses will be retrieved each night. Only rabbits that can be safely shot will be targeted.
NB in regard to domestic pets, we have been assured that, with the quality of the contractor’s night vision gear and their training, it is extremely unlikely a ‘non-target animal’ would be hurt.
